Peter Mendoza
Peter Mendoza is the newest member of the Board of Directors of Designing Accessible Communities.
Peter is a person with a disability, Cerebral Palsy and uses an electric wheelchair for mobility.
Based on his long and heart-felt history of advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities, Peter has recently been hired by the Berkeley Center for Independent living (CIL) to coordinate the contract for the client assistance program.
He served as a Community Service Officer for the Department of Public Safety in Ross, California, between 1996 and 2001. He was assigned to the Department 's School Safety Program, working under the direction of the Chief of Police. Peter represented the Ross Valley Police Department on the Marin County Department of Education's Law Enforcement Partnership program.
He provided liaison between the Department and the Ross School District. Peter also provided dispute resolution as part of his responsibility. In that position. he responded to emergencies, assisted in the apprehension of suspicious persons/suspects and most importantly, found lost children.
Since 2001 he had been the Community Service Officer for the Public Safety Department at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California. His duties were varied and he occasionally represented the University in other venues. Recently he participated in a Disability Employment panel at the University of San Francisco. In 2002 he received the Public Safety Officer of the Year award, nominated by his peers.
Peter Mendoza was raised in Novato, California and now lives with his wife Jennifer, in Berkeley, California.
